Earlier today I saw the video, “This Ancient Poem Transformed How I See the World“, by George Thompson of UK. I agree with him that, as there are so many options, it’s hard for many of us to know what the right thing to do is. That’s why we often find ourselves in search of the right answer. Such a journey seems impossible as it involves an infinite number of variables many of which are still inconceivable. As many have fear for their uncertain future, every culture came up with its own dogmatic stories helping to reduce uncertainty by suggesting dogmatic rules for use in search of a good life. However, as stated by Steve Jobs in 2005, “don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.”
How could we be happy? Every self-help book, video has an answer telling us how to be happy. How could we have a good life? Every school has an answer telling us how to have a good life. An answer, however, is not the absolute answer. A sequence of steps towards happiness, or an instruction on how to have a good life, does not always apply to your personal situation. Self-help books and videos are good. Schools and churches are good. However, the more you read self-help books, or watch self-help videos, the more you will feel lost. The more you talk to your professors, or consult with your philosophers, the more you will not know for sure what you should be doing next for your life That is because self-help books, professors, and philosophers did not, cannot, and will never know 100% what you truly want to become. Many of their lessons do not apply to your personal situation at every juncture in your life.
You know what you are. In the past, you took advice from self-help books and videos as well as from your professors and your philosophers. You did what they suggested and became who you are today. However, you’re not 100% happy with what you have. In that case, change what you do. If you don’t like what you have, change what you do.
When immigrants from a family do not speak a local language, they always need help from the local people for communication and many other things having to do with language problems. You are like an immigrant to the self-help country. Because you do not speak the self-help language, you always have a need for self-help books and videos. When you speak the self-help language, you no longer are an immigrant to the self-help country. When you can speak the self-help language, you are the self-help guru. As a guru, you can help yourself without the need for advice from too many other sources.
If you don’t like what you have, change what you do. Here is the first steps. Stop taking advice from self-help books and videos. Stop taking self-help advice from professors and philosophers. Start learning a non-dogmatic self-help nomenclature, such as the Thumos language, so you can become one of the self-help gurus who know how to create their own personal philosophy, which allows them to escape from being trapped by dogma.
